The Greater Guyana Initiative (GGI) has received more than 100 proposals from organisations seeking support, with its next formal application cycle expected to open in the first quarter of 2027, as the 10-year programme remains scheduled to conclude in 2029.
GGI lead Alicia Best-Anderson disclosed the figures and timelines during a discussion on the initiative, explaining that although formal application cycles are expected to take place annually, organisations can submit proposals throughout the year.
She also said applicants whose proposals are unsuccessful can request feedback on the areas that need improvement and consider resubmitting in a future cycle.

The initiative does not support individual ventures or projects designed solely for profit. Instead, proposals must demonstrate how they would deliver benefits across communities.
Best-Anderson said the programme is scheduled to end in 2029, but did not confirm whether a second phase, sometimes referred to as GGI 2.0, is being considered.
During the discussion, guest speaker Zaki Rahim, Senior Director of Programmes at Miller Center for Global Impact, highlighted the importance of ensuring that development projects can continue delivering benefits beyond the period of grant funding.
He emphasised the need for organisations to measure the lasting effects of their work, rather than focusing only on activities completed or the number of people reached. He also encouraged organisations to develop partnerships and sustainable funding arrangements to maintain their programmes.
Best-Anderson identified several weaknesses that can affect funding applications, including inadequate research to demonstrate the scale of a problem, proposals that duplicate existing initiatives, unclear outcomes and limited capacity to implement projects.

She also pointed to the need for applicants to show how their initiatives would remain viable over time. GGI is planning capacity-building and proposal-writing training in 2027 to help organisations strengthen their submissions.
While the initiative has not confirmed what will happen after its scheduled 2029 conclusion, the next application cycle is expected to provide another opportunity for eligible organisations to seek support.
