Guyanese forestry companies explore European technology, ‘green’ investment opportunities

Guyanese forestry companies are exploring opportunities for technology transfer, sustainable timber production and expanded international trade through a European Union (EU) forestry business mission currently underway in the Netherlands.

Running from November 1 to 7 under the EU’s Global Gateway Investment Agenda, the mission brings together forestry companies from Guyana and Suriname to learn about advanced European technologies, new wood-processing methods, and sustainable timber uses.

The Guyana Office for Investment (GO-Invest), represented by Senior Investment Officer Gabriel Bacchus, is taking part in the mission. The Guyana Forestry Commission, the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association (GMSA), and similar groups from Suriname are also involved.

During the programme, participants are meeting European industry leaders and visiting specialized facilities to see the latest in timber processing, sustainable construction, bioenergy, and wood-waste management.

Participants visited several companies and facilities, including Vandecasteele in Belgium, a major importer of sawn timber and wood products; Paulussen Hardthandel, a hardwood trader and wholesaler that works in processing, decking, and roofing; and Wood Architects, which focuses on sustainable wood construction.

They also learned about biomass technology at HoST Technology at NEXT Garden and saw advanced vacuum impregnation technology at an ISVE customer facility.

These activities aim to help Guyanese and Surinamese forestry businesses learn modern production techniques and show how European technologies can boost efficiency, support new products, and add value to their industries.

One main goal of the mission is to build stronger business ties between the forestry sectors of Guyana and Suriname and European buyers, investors, and technology providers. The mission also aims to create opportunities for technology transfer, innovation, and sustainable trade partnerships.

This mission is part of wider efforts to attract sustainable investment, strengthen regional forestry industries, and help these industries reach international markets through innovation and environmentally responsible production.
