‘Whole new onshore development’ for Berbice - Routledge

Guyana’s ancient country, Berbice could soon become the home of major downstream projects, including the country’s second Gas-to-Energy project, ExxonMobil Guyana President Alistair Routledge told a Houston, Texas crowd on Monday night.

Routledge spoke at a US-Guyana Business Exchange reception alongside Guyana’s President, Dr. Irfaan Ali and other key officials from the country. A delegation of about 100 Guyanese is in Houston for this year’s Offshore Technology Conference (OTC).

At the reception, Routledge highlighted the company’s intention to continue investing in Guyana, building on the successes achieved since the first oil find in 2015 and the startup of oil production in 2019.

Notably, he again confirmed that the American multinational will be investing in oil and gas developments near the Berbice area— projects that should spur major downstream activities.

“What we’ve been able to do, and the partnerships with the people of Guyana, gives us that confidence to continue on that journey, to continue to lean into some more challenging resources and make it happen.

“That’s what we’re going to do with the Longtail project and then hopefully with the Haimara project next year, bring that forward to the government and develop that ressource to support development in the Berbice area for a whole new onshore development,” Routledge said.

Once approved, Longtail and Haimara would be the eighth and ninth projects in the Stabroek Block. Longtail is the first project that focuses on non-associated gas, which is natural gas that occurs naturally in the reservoir.

Guyana has become a global oil hotspot, with an estimated 11 billion barrels of oil equivalent in the giant Stabroek Block offshore. Natural gas is also being tapped for a mega Gas-to-Energy project at Wales, West Bank, Demerara, which will then generate cleaner, cheaper power.

President Ali has expressed a clear interest in having the second gas project in Berbice. Data centres, power generation facilities, and bauxite-to-alumina plants are among the proposals for downstream projects in the Berbice received by the Government of Guyana and ExxonMobil.

Beyond the refinery & gas plants, Dr. Trotz sees need for CARICOM energy authority & regional companies
