From fuel storage plans to cross-border natural gas development, new agreements in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) provide a welcome boost to the country’s energy sector, according to the country’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
New developments in the country’s energy and industrial sectors were highlighted this week, as United States Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau visited the Caribbean nation.
Three major commercial ventures were spotlighted:
- A proposed fuel storage and bunkering terminal at Point Lisas, which is a major Trinidadian industrial center and port, from US energy infrastructure company Curlew Midstream
- A US$750 million revitalisation of the Point Lisas steel plant through Trinidad’s Ibis Steel Company, backed by United States parent firm Pinnacle Steel and Vanadium Corporation
- Agreements between the National Gas Company and BP linked to the Manakin-Cocuina (Trinidad- Venezuela) cross-border gas field
“Today, our nations turn longstanding friendship into action, into creating opportunities for our people,” Persad-Bissessar said at an event held at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann’s with the visiting Deputy Secretary of State.
In a release issued after the event, the Trinidadian government said, “The visit marked a significant step in advancing cooperation in energy, trade, investment and security, including progress on key initiatives to strengthen Trinidad and Tobago's energy sector, attract international investment and create sustainable opportunities for its people.”
It added, “The Prime Minister reaffirmed her Government’s commitment to rebuilding confidence in Trinidad and Tobago, revitalising the energy and industrial sectors, attracting international investment and creating sustainable jobs and opportunities for citizens.”
The Deputy Secretary of State travelled to Guyana subsequently. In a release, the Office of Guyanese President Irfaan Ali disclosed that a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at strengthening and expanding the existing Memorandum of Security Cooperation between Guyana and the US was inked during Landau’s visit.
