Phoenix Park Gas Processors Limited has been selected to run the Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) plant at Guyana’s Gas-to-Energy project at Wales, and a leading Trinidadian Energy Executive believes this partnership will help develop local capacity.
“I think it’s a really good opportunity. I think what that company will bring would be a level of expertise and skills that will facilitate knowledge transfer in Guyana,” Dr. Priya Marajh, the Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Chamber of Trinidad and Tobago, said at a press briefing in Georgetown on Wednesday.
Marajh also sees an opportunity for Guyanese services companies to learn and expand through engagements with the Phoenix Park companies.
“Overall, it’s a really good opportunity,” Marajh said.
Phoenix Park Gas Processors Limited (PPGPL), working alongside Guyanese company GuyGas Inc., had been selected as the top-ranked bidder to operate and maintain the NGL facility following a competitive procurement process.
PPGPL is a Trinidad company. Its facility in Trinidad designed to process raw natural gas from the existing natural gas pipeline system and extract natural gas liquids contained therein. This process allows it to deliver cleaner gas, free of heavy hydrocarbons, to downstream petrochemical plants. On its website, PPGPL says the plant also fractionates the natural gas liquids into three components: propane, butane, and natural gasoline.
Guyana’s Irfaan Ali-led Cabinet has granted its no-objection for negotiations to begin on a final operations and maintenance agreement with PPGPL and GuyGas. The NGL Plant forms a key part of the wider Gas-to-Energy project being developed in Wales, West Bank Demerara. The facility will process natural gas brought onshore from the Stabroek Block and support the production of electricity, while extracting natural gas products such as propane and butane.
Siemens Energy has already been selected to operate and maintain the project's 300-megawatt power plant and related facilities. Together, the power plant and NGL facility are expected to form an integrated operation aimed at delivering cleaner and more affordable energy.
The NGL plant is expected to begin operations during the first quarter of 2027.
