Training for Jobs: Local Content Secretariat to link schools with industry needs

As Guyana’s petroleum sector expands, the country’s Local Content Secretariat is developing a new framework to guarantee that workers are trained in the high-demand areas, effectively matching Guyanese to available job opportunities.

Director of the Secretariat, Michael Munroe told those gathered at the 2026 Local Content Summit that the agency is developing a local capacity development framework. The intention, he explained, is to consolidate and aggregate the data on what training programmes exist, their accreditation, and what skills are needed.

Next, the secretariat will engage the contractors and subcontractors so that there is a routine flow of information on what skills demands exist in the industry.

“Once we have that crystal appreciation, then we can reconcile the existing skills, where the gap exists and what needs to be done to ensure that our training institutions can provide certifications and skills that can readly be infused and integrated into the labour force that the industry needs,” Munroe said on Tuesday.

The impetus to match local training with job opportunities comes as the secretariat hopes to get more Guyanese involved in the sector.
