Guyana is seeking to expand its bauxite sector and possibly greenlight an alumina plant to process the ore. As the country explores those plans, its High Commissioner to India, Dharamkumar Seeraj, has invited Indian companies to seriously consider investments in this sector.
"There is huge scope for Indian companies to get involved in the mining of bauxite in Guyana.
"They [Indian companies] are experts in processing but not mining. Right now, there is the need on the supply side to increase our capacity to export more," Seeraj said during a recent interview with the New Delhi-based StratNews Global media platform.
Guyana is eyeing the construction of an alumina plant in Berbice to process bauxite. It would be part of a broader industrial complex planned for the region, to be powered by Guyana's second gas-to-energy project.
Already, at least one Indian company imports bauxite from Guyana. Seeraj noted, however, that demand for the ore far exceeds what Guyana currently produces and supplies. He believes Indian companies investing here would be mutually beneficial. In 2025, Guyana's President Dr. Irfaan Ali said the country is steadily increasing bauxite production.
Investing in the bauxite sector is one area where Seeraj believes the two countries can strengthen ties. He has also urged Indian companies to bid for oil blocks, and to continue partnering in the healthcare and defence sectors.
