Guyana has opened a new Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Centre of Excellence in Region Six, with the facility expected to provide specialised training for workers locally while eventually serving as a regional training hub.
The centre, located at the New Amsterdam Technical Institute, was commissioned on Friday and will host the Level Three Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ) programme in Occupational Safety and Health.
It is the result of a partnership between the Greater Guyana Initiative, the Ministry of Education, the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and LearnCorp International.
The facility comes as Guyana continues to expand its technical and vocational training capacity amid rapid economic growth, including the development of its oil and gas industry.
Education Minister Sonia Parag said stronger technical skills must be matched by stronger occupational safety standards, particularly as more people enter specialised fields.
“We cannot say that we’re an oil-producing nation and we are developing at a pace that is now called the fastest-growing economy…and then we do not take care of our most valuable asset, which is our people,” Parag said.
The centre is expected to provide national training while also developing into a regional hub for occupational safety and health.
Parag said the facility is intended to support Guyana's broader push to expand technical and vocational education, while positioning the country to provide specialised training beyond its borders.
The Government's focus is also on what happens after people complete the training.
Parag said the success of the facility should not be measured only by the number of students enrolled, but by how many eventually become leaders in their respective fields in Guyana and overseas.
