Guyana's rapid development is transforming communities and villages across the country. Through the Government's Model Village Initiative, villages are being reimagined with improved infrastructure, better public spaces and stronger community participation. To complement the Government's vision for greener and more connected communities, in today’s Greenline I want to offer five practical ideas that can help every village thrive.
1. Create Green Community Spaces
Develop and maintain safe green spaces in every community by transforming vacant lands into parks and spaces where families can relax, children can play and community events can be held.
2. Plant More Trees and Protect Nature
In collaboration with the Protected Areas Commission who already started a national tree-planting programme, villages can be supported to plant trees along roads, canals and public spaces to provide shade, improve air quality and enhance the beauty of Guyana.
3. Build More Walkable Villages
Pair upgraded roads and drainage with landscaped sidewalks, bicycle lanes and well-maintained public spaces that encourage walking and improve public safety.
4. Encourage village Pride
Support neighbourhood clean-up and beautification programmes through partnerships with NDCs, schools, youth groups and community organisations, ensuring residents play an active role in maintaining their villages.
5. Celebrate Each Village's Identity
Highlight the unique history and culture of every community through landscaping, murals and public art, while introducing a Green Village record that recognises communities leading in environmental and national pride.
By investing in greener public spaces and encouraging community ownership, villages can become more vibrant places to live. Together, these ideas build on the Government's investments and support a future where every village is a source of pride for the people who call it home.
