Future Guyana FPSOs could feature carbon capture technology

Future floating production vessels operating offshore Guyana could incorporate onboard carbon capture technology as SBM Offshore prepares the next generation of lower-emission FPSOs.

Chief Executive Officer Øivind Tangen revealed that the company is studying modular carbon capture systems that can be integrated into future FPSOs once oil producers begin requesting the technology.

"We're conducting studies right now on modularised carbon capture systems."

He said SBM has spent years improving the efficiency of its FPSOs by reducing emissions and fuel consumption, with carbon capture representing the next step.

While no current projects require the technology, Tangen said SBM wants to be ready when clients decide to include carbon capture as part of future developments.

The technology could eventually become relevant for Guyana as offshore production continues to expand and operators seek to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
