The President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, will soon visit Guyana as the two countries continue talks focused on bilateral development and the region’s energy security.

Guyana’s President, Dr. Irfaan Ali announced the expected visit of the DR President while speaking to a gathering of Guyanese private sector players and members of the diaspora in Houston, Texas on Tuesday night.

In his candid address, President Ali highlighted key investment opportunities in Guyana. He emphasised that his administration isn’t only focused on the rapidly-advancing oil and gas sector, but also on other sectors of the economy from tourism to agriculture and technology services.

And the President said his government is keen on embracing partnerships— locally and abroad— that will help it advance this ambitious development agenda.

“We are looking at integrating our economy with northern Brazil, and soon we will have a state visit from the President of the Dominican Republic because we see opportunities and synergies there too,” President Ali said.

The Guyanese Head of State did not provide additional details on the visit but just weeks ago, President Ali announced that he was again in talks with the DR President for the establishment of a local refinery in Guyana. An oil refinery is being seriously considered to meet local demand and help insulate the country from any disruptions caused by global shocks.

In 2023, Guyana and the Dominican Republic (DR) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a new oil refinery in Guyana, and President Ali said then that the Spanish-speaking country’s role in the project increased its viability.

Beyond the refinery & gas plants, Dr. Trotz sees need for CARICOM energy authority & regional companies
