Twenty-eight second-year students enrolled in the Associate of Science (Applied and Exploration Geology) programme at the University of Guyana (UG) have begun industry-led training in exploration and mapping skills through a programme run by the Guyana Mining School and Training Centre Inc. (GMSTCI).

The training, which commenced on 1 July 2026, covers geological mapping, GPS navigation, spatial data analysis using QGIS — a geographic information system software widely used in the exploration sector — and mineral prospecting.

In a release, the Ministry of Natural Resources said the students are being immersed in classroom instruction and practical field exercises over the next several weeks, building the technical competencies required for careers in Guyana's expanding mineral exploration sector.

"This collaborative initiative reflects GMSTCI's ongoing commitment to supporting tertiary education by delivering industry-relevant training that bridges the gap between academic learning and professional practice. Through hands-on experience and technical instruction, students will develop the practical competencies and professional skills required for successful careers in Guyana's expanding mining and mineral exploration sector," the ministry stated.

The Guyana Mining School and Training Centre Incorporated was established in 2012 under the Companies Act, with its shares wholly owned by the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC). It falls under the purview of the Ministry of Natural Resources through the GGMC.

The school also offers courses in jewellery making, occupational safety and health (OSH), and a community mines ranger programme
