Oil boom creates new breed of entrepreneurs as Nayman Gill builds OGN Group for bigger opportunities

Guyana's oil boom is not only creating billion-dollar investments offshore, it is also giving rise to a new generation of local entrepreneurs

Among them is Nayman Gill, a young businessman who started with a pressure-washing machine and a vehicle during the COVID-19 pandemic and is now building OGN Group Inc. into a diversified service company with ambitions that stretch into the oil and gas supply chain.

As new housing schemes emerge, construction activity intensifies and thousands of workers enter the economy, Gill believes demand for support services such as waste disposal, trucking, land clearing and maintenance is growing alongside the country's energy sector.

"More people are coming, more homes are being built, more apartments are going up," Gill said. "More consumption means there is more to dispose of, and we're here to provide that service."

The company traces its roots to a small cleaning operation that Gill and his brother launched during the pandemic. What began as pressure washing and maintenance services evolved as they identified gaps in the market and sought to capitalize on Guyana's transformation.

Today, OGN Group brings together multiple operations under one umbrella, including waste disposal, trucking, landscaping, land clearing, construction-related services and pressure washing.

Gill says the strategy has been simply to build services around convenience at a time when many Guyanese are working multiple jobs or managing businesses of their own.

"We saw that people needed reliable services and convenience. We wanted to create a company that could handle those needs and make life easier," he explained.

But while OGN's growth has been driven primarily by residential and private-sector demand, Gill has his eyes firmly fixed on the opportunities emerging from the country's oil and gas industry.

Recognizing the importance of positioning his company early, OGN secured Local Content certification, allowing it to pursue opportunities reserved for Guyanese businesses under the country's local content framework.

"We haven't started serving oil and gas companies yet, but we wanted to make sure we are ready when those opportunities come," Gill said.

The entrepreneur is urging other small businesses not to wait until opportunities arrive before getting their affairs in order.

"Get certified now. Be compliant now. Position yourself now. When the opportunity comes, you'll already be ready."

For Gill, the country's oil-driven economic transformation is creating opportunities far beyond the offshore platforms and multinational contractors often associated with the sector.

Every new housing development requires maintenance. Every construction project generates waste. Every growing community needs disposal services and logistics support.

Those realities, he believes, will continue to create space for local businesses willing to grow with the country.

"As Guyana grows, OGN Group will grow with it," Gill said.

And while waste disposal may not carry the glamour of offshore drilling, Gill sees it as an essential piece of the economic puzzle.

"If we don't do it, somebody has to do it," he said. "A clean community means a better Guyana, and that's something we're proud to be part of."
