... Gossai Jr. urges residents to get ready for opportunities coming
Guyana’s first data centre is one of the new developments slated for Region Three (Essequibo Islands - West Demerara) once the long-anticipated Wales Gas-to-Energy project becomes operational.
“Region Three will have the first data centre in Guyana. That’s huge for your community as well as for the country,” Bobby Gossai Jr., the Senior Petroleum Coordinator at Guyana's Ministry of Natural Resources, said during a Region Three engagement forum on Thursday.
A data centre in the region has been discussed for sometime. In 2025, the Guyana Government inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Cerebras Systems from the United States of America to build and operate a state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) data center of up to 100MW in Wales.
According a government release issued then, Cerebras’ investment will deploy its cutting-edge CS-3 AI supercomputers and infrastructure to serve international demand, as well as position Guyana as a global destination for startups, researchers, and enterprises seeking high-performance compute capabilities in a favorable country environment. The facility will serve as the cornerstone of a thriving technology ecosystem, catalyzing economic growth, job creation, and educational advancement across the country.
Alongside the data centre at Wales, the government is pursuing a fertiliser-making facility and a gas bottling plant — all of which should be fueled by the 300 megawatt Gas-to-Energy project running on natural gas found in the Stabroek Block offshore Guyana.
A second power plant should also be built right at Wales, Gossai Jr. said, as the demand for power in Region Three and across Guyana continues to grow.
For the Natural Resources Ministry official, Region Three is set for massive transformation so residents to position themselves to capitalise on the forthcoming economic opportunities.
