ExxonMobil Guyana on Wednesday said it will soon undertake pipeline maintenance activities offshore Crane, West Coast Demerara, ahead of the expected startup of the Gas-to-Energy project.
In a statement, ExxonMobil Guyana said: "The work will address a finding on a near-shore section of the pipeline identified by inspection activities earlier this year, and is part of our commitment to maintaining the safety, integrity and reliability of the infrastructure."
Maintenance activities are scheduled to commence on October 14, 2026, and are expected to continue until around December 1, 2026. The company said the work is being conducted in accordance with international standards and will help ensure the pipeline's long-term integrity.
THE FINDING
An ExxonMobil Guyana spokesperson said that "further testing and evaluation" will be done to confirm the exact nature of the "finding."
In July 2026, Guyana's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) confirmed that a "slight anomaly" had been reported at the pipeline and thoroughly investigated. Further details on the anomaly were not provided, but the joint statement noted that further inspections were being carried out to confirm the continued integrity of the pipeline. It was emphasised that the pipeline was not ruptured.
This pipeline will transport natural gas produced in the Stabroek Block offshore to Wales, on the West Bank of Demerara, where a power plant is expected to convert the gas into electricity. The first phase of the project is expected to start up by December 2026.
SAFE OPERATIONS
The pipeline is currently pressurised with inert gas (nitrogen) and is not yet in operation. As a result, it does not pose a risk to the public or the environment. ExxonMobil Guyana said it aims to complete the maintenance work before the startup of Gas-to-Energy operations to minimise potential for interruptions in the future.
"ExxonMobil Guyana is coordinating with relevant stakeholders regarding the activities. A marine notice containing information for mariners operating in the area will be issued by MARAD," the company said.
