Caribbean energy leaders to meet in Guyana for regional engineering, procurement conference

Guyana will take centre stage in the Caribbean's energy conversation later this month as hundreds of engineers, utility executives, procurement specialists and technology providers gather in Georgetown for one of the region's premier electricity industry conferences.

The Caribbean Electric Utility Services Corporation (CARILEC), in partnership with Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) and the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA), will host the Engineering & Procurement Conference & Exhibition 2026 from July 26 to 30 at the Guyana Marriott Hotel.

Held under the theme "Grid Modernization and Resilience – Strategic Procurement in Focus," the five-day event comes as Caribbean countries accelerate investments in modern, more resilient electricity systems capable of supporting growing economies and expanding renewable energy generation.

The conference will bring together regional utility leaders, engineers, procurement professionals, independent power producers (IPPs), policymakers and suppliers to examine the latest technologies, procurement strategies and engineering solutions shaping the future of electricity across the Caribbean.

Participants will engage in technical presentations, panel discussions, interactive roundtables and utility project updates, while sharing lessons learned from projects already underway across the region.

A major attraction will be the exhibition, where more than 30 manufacturers, suppliers and technology companies will showcase innovations in transmission and distribution systems, substation equipment, smart metering technologies, communications infrastructure, safety equipment, engineering services, software solutions and renewable energy applications.

The programme will also include Utility and IPP Update Sessions, allowing Caribbean utilities and independent power producers to provide updates on major projects while encouraging collaboration on common challenges facing the region's power sector.

GPL Chief Executive Officer Kas Nandall said the conference reflects the growing importance of regional partnerships as utilities work to modernise electricity networks.

"The challenges and opportunities facing Caribbean utilities are increasingly shared, making regional collaboration essential to our collective success," Nandall said.

He noted that Guyana is pleased to welcome utility leaders, engineers, procurement professionals and industry partners from across the Caribbean to strengthen partnerships that will help build a more resilient and sustainable regional energy sector.

CARILEC Executive Director Dr. Cletus Bertin described the conference as one of the Caribbean's leading forums for knowledge sharing and innovation in the electricity industry.

"CARILEC exists to strengthen the Caribbean energy sector through collaboration, knowledge sharing, and partnerships," Bertin said, adding that the conference provides an opportunity for industry leaders to exchange ideas, explore emerging technologies and develop practical solutions to the challenges confronting electricity providers.

To encourage strong local participation, CARILEC is offering a discounted registration fee of US$1,000, with a reduced rate of US$750 per participant for groups of two or more from Guyanese companies and government agencies.

Organisers say the event offers local businesses a valuable opportunity to connect directly with regional decision-makers, identify business opportunities and gain insights into upcoming energy projects and procurement priorities across the Caribbean.

Founded in 1989, CARILEC represents more than 100 utilities, energy service providers and other stakeholders operating throughout the Caribbean electricity sector. The organisation promotes collaboration, technical development and capacity building to improve the reliability and sustainability of electricity services across the region.
