Why blackouts should become shorter

Guyanese could spend less time without electricity in the future as Guyana Power and Light (GPL) rolls out a modern smart grid designed to detect faults faster and restore power more quickly.

During its recent CARILEC presentation, GPL explained that new investments in digital infrastructure will allow the electricity network to isolate faults automatically, reroute electricity where possible and improve overall system reliability.

The utility said smart feeders, automated switches, reclosers and intelligent electronic devices will work alongside the Guyana National Control Centre to continuously monitor the network.

These technologies are expected to deliver faster fault isolation, quicker restoration of electricity, improved voltage stability and better overall service quality for consumers.

GPL noted that the programme represents a shift away from manually operated networks toward an increasingly automated electricity system capable of responding to problems in real time.

At the CARILEC conference, Guyana Power and Light (GPL) outlined plans to integrate power generation, transmission, battery storage, smart meters and automated control systems into a single, real-time operating platform centred on the Guyana National Control Centre (GNCC).

The utility explained that the future smart grid will combine gas-fired plants, solar farms, battery storage systems, transmission infrastructure, smart feeders, automated switches, intelligent electronic devices and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI).

Real-time monitoring through SCADA, Energy Management Systems and Automatic Generation Control will allow operators to continuously monitor the network, optimise power flows and respond more quickly to faults.

GPL said the integrated platform is expected to improve electricity reliability, optimise dispatch, strengthen planning and accelerate service restoration following outages.

The presentation described the GNCC as the digital backbone that will connect every major component of Guyana's evolving electricity network.
