As Guyanese earn more, they’re building bigger homes, taking larger loans & moving beyond Georgetown

Housing Minister Collin Croal says rising incomes linked to the petroleum sector are allowing more Guyanese to qualify for larger mortgages, build bigger homes and pursue higher-end housing options. “What we are noticing is that because persons are earning more, when they go to the bank, they are asking for an increase in the amount of loan they're taking to build. They're building bigger houses,” Croal revealed. The shift is also changing housing preferences. More professionals, particularly those working offshore, are opting for completed homes, townhouses and modular housing instead of traditional house lots, citing limited time to manage construction projects. At the same time, major infrastructure projects are fueling a migration away from Georgetown. With the East Bank largely allocated, government housing expansion is now accelerating along the East Coast corridor, Silicon City and areas connected by new highways. “The East Coast and the East Bank will be the place to be in the next few years,” Croal predicted.
