The Natural Resource Fund accounted for almost half of the Bank of Guyana's total assets at the close of business on September 23, according to the latest central bank statement published in the Official Gazette.
The Bank reported total assets of $1.127 trillion, including a $515.65 billion claim on the Natural Resource Fund.
The NRF claim represented approximately 45.8% of the Bank's total assets on the date of the statement.
That gives the latest Bank of Guyana balance sheet a direct connection to Guyana's petroleum economy, since the Natural Resource Fund is the vehicle through which the country's petroleum revenues are received and managed. The Fund receives revenues including profit oil and royalties.
The Bank also reported $268.08 billion in foreign assets and $193.85 billion in Government of Guyana securities.
On the liabilities side, currency in circulation included approximately $504.46 billion in Bank of Guyana notes and $1.32 billion in coins.
The figures provide a snapshot of the central bank's financial position as Guyana's petroleum revenues continue to reshape the country's balance sheet.
The Bank of Guyana is responsible for the operational management of the Natural Resource Fund. Its annual reporting says the Fund's revenues include profit oil, royalties and signature bonuses, with petroleum revenues deposited into the Fund's account.
The latest statement, however, does not mean the Bank physically holds $515.65 billion in oil cash. The figure is recorded on the Bank's balance sheet as a claim on the Natural Resource Fund.
