Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) is stepping up efforts to strengthen electricity supply in Bartica, Region Seven, as demand continues to grow across the township and surrounding communities.
A new 2.2-megawatt Cummins generating set—Set #4—is set to be commissioned by the end of July 2026, adding a major boost to local power capacity. The expansion is part of GPL’s wider push to improve reliability and support economic and population growth in the hinterland.
Bartica currently operates with about 5.3 megawatts of generation capacity, while peak demand sits at roughly 3 megawatts. The addition of the new unit will not only reinforce supply stability but also provide critical reserve capacity for future growth in residential, commercial, and industrial activity.
The town is already benefiting from a 1.5-megawatt solar farm, which works alongside thermal generation as GPL continues to diversify Guyana’s energy mix. The combination of renewable and conventional power is helping to build a more resilient and efficient electricity system for customers.
GPL says the investment reflects its ongoing commitment to modernising infrastructure and ensuring safe, reliable, and consistent electricity service across Guyana—particularly in fast-developing hinterland communities like Bartica.
