Major components of Guyana’s Gas-to-Energy Project at Wales have now been installed, with other critical infrastructure also advancing, Prime Minister Mark Phillips said on Tuesday following a progress inspection of the facility.
Phillips, who is performing the functions of President and has oversight responsibility for the energy sector and the Gas-to-Energy Project, visited the Wales site where he received technical briefings and inspected ongoing works across the facility.
He said the visit formed part of his periodic assessment of the project to ensure that implementation remains aligned with the established schedule.
During the inspection, the delegation observed progress on the gas turbines, steam turbine, storage tanks, foundations, piping and other supporting systems. Work was also inspected at the substation, which will facilitate the transmission of electricity from the facility to the national grid.
Following the inspection, Phillips said there has been substantial progress since his previous visit to the project in June.
“Since my last inspection in June, works have advanced substantially,” the Prime Minister said, noting that several major components are now installed while critical infrastructure continues to progress across key areas of the facility.
The project remains on track for its first gas turbine to come online by the end of 2026, when it is expected to deliver approximately 57 megawatts of electricity to the national grid. The remaining units are expected to be brought online subsequently in keeping with the project’s implementation schedule.
The Gas-to-Energy Project is intended to use natural gas from Guyana’s offshore petroleum operations to generate electricity, with the Wales facility forming a key part of the initiative.
Phillips was accompanied during Tuesday’s visit by Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation Deodat Indar; Head of the Gas-to-Energy Task Force and Project Lead Winston Brassington; Senior Petroleum Coordinator at the Ministry of Natural Resources Bobby Gossai Jr.; Head of Guyana Power and Light’s Executive Management Committee Kesh Nandlall; and other technical officials from GPL and the project team.
