A historic cardiac telesurgery between the Georgetown Public Hospital and healthcare specialists in Indore, India, has been hailed by Guyana’s President, Dr Irfaan Ali, as the longest-distance telesurgery ever completed.
The announcement was made by President Ali at a press conference on Tuesday, as Guyana celebrated its 60th Independence Anniversary.
The coronary artery bypass graft surgery was led by Dr Sudhir Srivastava in Guyana, alongside a team of Guyanese specialists trained in India. Dr Srivastava, the founder of SS Innovations International Inc., is behind the medical technology company that has supplied new surgical robotic systems to Guyana.

Using the robotic system in Guyana, Dr Srivastava operated on a patient in Indore, thousands of kilometres away. Robotic surgeries for patients in Guyana continued throughout Tuesday.
President Ali said the systems will not only revolutionise healthcare in Guyana, but also position the country as a regional hub for robotic surgery.
The India-made SSI Mantra systems even carry a name fitting for the occasion: Freedom 60, a nod to Guyana’s Independence Anniversary. According to Dr Hemraj Ramcharran, a general surgeon trained in India who conducted a robotic surgery in Guyana on Tuesday, the systems result in smaller incisions, less pain and faster recovery times for patients
