When Fueled.gy reported on Thursday that Guyana's first commercial data centre is planned for Region Three, one question dominated the conversation:
Can Guyana's electricity system actually support it?
Citizens flooded social media with concerns about whether the country generates enough electricity, whether the transmission network is reliable enough, and whether a data centre could strain an already growing power system.
Those are fair questions.

But according to Guyana Power and Light (GPL), they're also questions the utility has already been planning for.
Speaking at the Caribbean Electric Utility Services Corporation (CARILEC) Engineering and Procurement Conference recently, GPL management revealed that it is no longer planning the country's electricity system based only on historical demand.
Instead, the utility says it is designing the future grid around the industries expected to drive Guyana's economy over the next decade, including data centres, electric vehicles, new housing developments, manufacturing and major infrastructure projects.
That means future electricity forecasts now specifically include projected demand from large-scale digital infrastructure.
GPL explained that it is using advanced planning software that combines customer data, economic growth projections, operational information and multiple development scenarios to determine where new generation, transmission and distribution investments should be made.
The objective, the company said, is to ensure the power system is built ahead of demand, rather than reacting after electricity shortages emerge.
The disclosure comes as public debate intensifies over the country's first planned data centre.
Many commenters pointed to the enormous electricity requirements of modern data centres, while others questioned whether Guyana's grid, still undergoing significant upgrades, can reliably power such facilities alongside homes and businesses.
Some also raised concerns about cooling requirements and the additional strain that artificial intelligence and cloud computing facilities could place on electricity networks.

GPL's presentation suggests those concerns are precisely why the utility has broadened its long-term planning.
The company says future investments are being designed with emerging industries in mind, signalling that data centres are no longer viewed as a distant possibility but as part of Guyana's expected economic landscape.
The planned data centre also aligns with broader government efforts to expand electricity generation through the Gas-to-Energy Project, new solar farms with battery storage, additional gas-fired generation, transmission upgrades and the development of a smarter national grid.
